Melita, Manitoba
Today, Merv Tweed, Member of Parliament for Brandon–Souris, on behalf of the Honourable Lynne Yelich, Minister of State for Western Economic Diversification, announced federal funding for the Melita & Area Arena under the Harper Government’s Community Infrastructure Improvement Fund (CIIF).
"This facility is at the heart of Melita’s recreation activities and is an important gathering place for people of all ages," said MP Tweed. "By improving facilities such as this, our Government is continuing to support communities across Canada and encouraging long-term prosperity."
With federal funding of $248,500, the Melita & Area Arena will install a new ice plant, glass, rink boards and will make improvements to the viewing area. These upgrades will improve the current facility and make the arena more accessible and safer for people of all ages.
"On behalf of the Melita & Area Arena Board, I would like to sincerely thank the federal government for the assistance provided by the CIIF program. The replacement of the ice plant, arena boards and plexi-glass brings to a close phase 2 of our 3 phase project," said Glenn Vercaigne of the Melita and Area Arena Board. "This project, when complete, will help us increase revenue, decrease operating costs and serve the community for years to come."
CIIF supports, on a cost-shared basis, repairs and improvements to existing community infrastructure accessible to the public. Western Economic Diversification Canada (WD) is delivering the Fund in Western Canada with an allocation of $46.2 million over two years.
Since 2006, the Harper Government, through WD, has invested in job-creating, small-and-medium-sized businesses, aerospace, marine and defence industries, and supported innovative entrepreneurs in pursuing emerging markets. By continuing to promote new economic opportunities, WD is helping to create jobs, economic growth, and long-term prosperity.
