Shell Lake, Saskatchewan
Today, Rob Clarke, Member of Parliament for Desnethé-Missinippi-Churchill River, on behalf of the Honourable Lynne Yelich, Minister of State for Western Economic Diversification, announced federal funding for the Shell Lake community centre under the Harper Government’s Community Infrastructure Improvement Fund (CIIF).
“Our Government is committed to creating jobs, growth and long-term prosperity in our communities,” said MP Clarke. “By improving facilities such as the Shell Lake and District Lions Club, we are helping to boost economic activity and maintain a high quality of life for Canadians.”
The $7,650 in federal funding for the project will include repairs to the building foundation to extend its life. A new stairway will also improve safe access to the community centre.
“The village of Shell lake is, of course, very happy to hear that we have been awarded a CIIF investment in the amount of $7,650,” said Mayor Anita Weiers. “This will enable the Lion's Club to bring the community hall up to standard and will greatly prolong the ‘life’ of the building and the ‘life’ of our community.”
CIIF supports, on a cost-shared basis, repairs and improvements to existing community infrastructure accessible to the public. Western Economic Diversification Canada (WD) is delivering the Fund in Western Canada with an allocation of $46.2 million over two years.
“The Shell Lake Lions club is grateful for the support of CIIF funding,” said Lions club President, Gary Taylor. “I can't state the importance a community hall has in the life of a village as it is used for weddings, funerals, birthdays etc. The motto of the Lions Club is ‘We Serve’ and we raised half of the money needed to replace the crumbling foundation wall. With the 50/50 CIIF investment, it will be repaired by spring.”
Since 2006, the Harper Government, through WD, has invested in job-creating small and medium-sized businesses, aerospace, marine and defence industries, and supported innovative entrepreneurs in pursuing emerging markets. By continuing to promote new economic opportunities, WD is helping to create jobs, economic growth, and long-term prosperity.
