Today, Joy Smith, Member of Parliament for Kildonan – St. Paul, on behalf of the Honourable Lynne Yelich, Minister of State for Western Economic Diversification, announced federal funding for the Polish Gymnastic Association Sokol under the Harper Government’s Community Infrastructure Improvement Fund (CIIF).
“This facility hosts a broad range of cultural activities throughout the year and is a vital part of Winnipeg’s Polish community,” said Member of Parliament Joy Smith. “By improving facilities such as this we are helping to create local jobs and economic growth while boosting social and cultural activity to enhance the lives of Canadians.”
Funding of $26,015 will go towards replacing the roof on their facility, in Winnipeg’s Noth End. This improvement will allow the Polish Gymnastic Association Sokol to continue important programming for children and youth, and provide a venue for public events.
“This funding is going to have a massive impact on the Polish Gymnastic Association Sokol Winnipeg. We have literally hundreds of people coming through the organization on a weekly basis, and keeping our building functional for our guests is critical for the future of the organization,” said Marian Jaworski, President of the Polish Gymnastic Association Sokol. “This funding has given our organization the assurance that we’ll be able to continue with the many cultural events and recreational activities that are held in our building.”
CIIF supports, on a cost-shared basis, repairs and improvements to existing community infrastructure accessible to the public. Western Economic Diversification Canada (WD) is delivering the Fund in Western Canada with an allocation of $46.2 million over two years.
Since 2006, the Harper Government, through WD, has invested in job-creating, small-and-medium-sized businesses, aerospace, marine and defence industries, and supported innovative entrepreneurs in pursuing emerging markets. By continuing to promote new economic opportunities, WD is helping to create jobs, economic growth, and long-term prosperity.
