The Government of Canada is making investments in clean energy that are reducing greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) while helping to position innovative technologies at the forefront of the energy economy.
The Government of Canada has developed a broad suite of policies and programs to contribute to reducing GHG emissions by 17 percent below 2005 levels by 2020.
The Government is also working with industry, provincial governments and other key stakeholders to help transform our energy industry and to help it take advantage of the growing eco-economy, where innovation and environmental performance are key.
Since 2007, our clean energy programs have leveraged over $25 billion in investments and contributed to the creation of over 5,000 jobs - and double that amount in indirect jobs.
Examples of key programs and initiatives:
- Since 2006, the Government of Canada has invested more than $10 billion to reduce GHG emissions and build a more sustainable environment through investments in green infrastructure, energy efficiency, clean energy technologies and the production of cleaner energy and cleaner fuels.
- The ecoENERGY Efficiency Initiatives are providing $195 million, over five years, to improve energy efficiency in Canadian homes, buildings, industries, vehicles and equipment.
- The ecoENERGY Innovation Initiative, a $281 million investment over five years, is supporting a wide range of collaboration among industry, Canada's colleges and universities and government to support research, development and demonstration of clean energy technologies.
