CHARLOTTETOWN – The Honourable Gail Shea, Minister of National Revenue for Canada and the Honourable Robert Vessey, Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal for Prince Edward Island were joined by David McKenna, Chairman of the Charlottetown Airport Authority to celebrate the grand opening of the expanded terminal facility at the Charlottetown Airport.
"I am proud to be a part of a government committed to growing our economy and creating jobs across the country," said Minister Shea. "The expanded terminal facility at the Charlottetown Airport will boost the region's economy and tourism industry and, in turn, provide additional opportunities for economic growth and employment for Islanders."
"Air access to and from Prince Edward Island is a key strategic priority for the Charlottetown Airport Authority. This recent expansion and renovation of our facilities will allow us to grow our service offerings while also offering our passengers a much more efficient travel experience," said David McKenna, Chairman of Charlottetown Airport Authority Inc. "We would like to thank our partners in this project for seeing the value of our airport to the community."
Supporting the Atlantic Gateway, the expanded terminal facilities will allow the airport to accommodate projected traffic growth as well as improve the airport's level of service. As part of this project, the airport renovated and expanded airline check-in counters, enlarged passenger queuing space, developed the departure lounge and restaurant, and created new airline offices and baggage handling facilities.
"The Government of Prince Edward Island is pleased to support investments that grow our Island economy and create jobs for Islanders," said Minister Vessey. "This expansion will expand and improves services at the Charlottetown Airport, a key tourism and trade gateway for our province."
Construction to expand the terminal, which began on September 11, 2011, was completed in December 2012. The project was jointly funded by the federal and provincial governments as well as the airport authority for a total cost of $3.8 million. The Government of Canada contributed $1.2 million from the Gateways and Border Crossings Fund. The Government of Prince Edward Island invested $1.15 million.
