January 23, 2013 Valhalla Centre, Alberta
Today, Chris Warkentin, Member of Parliament for Peace River, on behalf of the Honourable Lynne Yelich, Minister of State for Western Economic persification, announced federal funding for accessibility improvements to the Valhalla Community Centre and Library under the Harper Government’s Community Infrastructure Improvement Fund (CIIF).
“Our Government is continuing to support communities across Canada by investing in the renewal of local facilities,
” said MP Warkentin. “This project will create jobs, growth and long-term prosperity in Valhalla Centre community.
”
The Harper Government’s investment of $99,127 will assist with upgrades to the Valhalla Community Centre and Library, including the installation of new doors, walls, and flooring, and the creation of a larger entrance area. Exterior improvements will include paving the parking lot and access path to the building, which will provide those with limited mobility easier access into the Centre.
“There are no words to express how excited we are, knowing we can finally complete this project we have been envisioning over the past five years,
” said Richard Harpe, Facility Manager of the Valhalla Community Centre and Library. “The Centre is aptly called the ‘Valhalla Viking Community Centre’ which denotes the heritage of the Norwegian settlers who settled the area 100 years ago. With this in mind, this news couldn’t be timelier as we are preparing to celebrate the 100th Anniversary of the settlement of the Valhalla Centre and area this coming summer. Further, I am certain that these improvements will make every inpiduals visit to the Facility more pleasurable in the future.
”
In Economic Action Plan 2012, the Harper Government announced further support to help communities across the country modernize their infrastructure. Our Government committed $150 million over two years for the Fund. The Fund supports projects that look to improve existing community infrastructure accessible for use by the public, such as community centres, recreational buildings, local arenas, cultural and other community facilities.
Since 2006, the Harper Government, through WD, has invested in job-creating small and medium-sized businesses, aerospace, marine and defence industries, and supported innovative entrepreneurs in pursuing emerging markets. By continuing to promote new economic opportunities, WD is helping to create jobs, economic growth, and long-term prosperity.
