(Ottawa, ON) - Significant snow falls and bone-chilling temperatures following thaws have created slippery driveways, stairs and walkways, increasing the risks of injuries for everyone. Canada Post is asking home and business owners to help keep everyone safe, including delivery employees, by clearing snow and ice as soon as possible after a snowfall.
The slippery conditions are especially widespread in much of Ontario, Newfoundland and Labrador and the interior of British Columbia right now – but they can occur suddenly anywhere in the country at this time of year. Icy conditions hidden by a coat of fresh fallen snow can be particularly hazardous.
Here are some tips on how to help:
- Shovel regularly to remove snow, ice, and other debris from walkways, driveways, and around mailboxes;
- Put salt down to melt existing ice on stairs, walkways, and driveways;
- Put sand down as an extra precaution to ensure a safe walking surface.
Canada Post delivery employees each travel close to 10 kilometres and deliver mail to some 1,000 doors every day. Clear walkways make a big difference. Canada Post appreciates the cooperation of residents across the country in helping our employees stay safe this winter.
