The Canadian Northern Economic Development Agency (CanNor) is investing $84,457 for two multi-level 12 week trades training courses that will be delivered by the Champagne and Aishihik First Nations (CAFN) in Haines Junction and Takhini River, Yukon. Approximately 13 students will take part in the work site based trades training program in order to build the necessary skills to take advantage of local job opportunities. Yukon College is involved with delivering the training and providing classroom space in Haines Junction.
This project builds on a pilot project delivered in 2012 when the CAFN economic development and housing branches brought together educators to create learning environments on CAFN building sites. The project also supports CAFN's broader interest in developing timber products manufacturing in the region. A skilled labour pool of trades people will provide a local workforce for CAFN's future building projects.
Investment in this project is made possible through CanNor's Community Economic Opportunities Program (CEOP), part of the Aboriginal Economic Development (AED) suite of programs. The CEOP provides project-based support to First Nation and Inuit communities for community economic development.
CanNor delivers on its exclusive northern mandate through funding programs, providing project management services, leveraging the federal role in the North, serving as a champion for northern interests, and undertaking policy and research.
