Ottawa, Ontario, February 22, 2013 – The Honourable Rona Ambrose, Minister of Public Works and Government Services and Minister for Status of Women, today announced that the Government of Canada has named four of its buildings in commemoration of several heroes of the War of 1812.
“I am delighted that these buildings are being named to commemorate important figures who played crucial roles during the War of 1812,” Minister Ambrose stated. “The fight for Canada laid the foundation for Confederation and the cornerstones of our political institutions—their efforts helped pave the way for the Canada we know today.”
A commemorative plaque with the name of the hero will adorn the following buildings:
These events are part of several commemoration activities taking place to mark the 200th anniversary of the War of 1812. The anniversary is an opportunity for all Canadians to take pride in our country’s traditions and history. The end of the war laid the foundation for Confederation and Canada’s ultimate emergence as an independent nation in North America.
In October 2012, three buildings were also named to commemorate heroes of the war: the Laura Secord Building (in St. Catharines, Ontario), the Sir Isaac Brock Building (in Hamilton, Ontario) and the Dominique Ducharme Building (in Montréal, Quebec).
