Today, Chris Warkentin, Member of Parliament for Peace River, on behalf of the Honourable Lynne Yelich, Minister of State for Western Economic Diversification, announced federal funding for the Fairplex Arena under the Harper Government’s Community Infrastructure Improvement Fund (CIIF).
“Our Government is committed to creating jobs, growth and long-term prosperity in our communities,
” said MP Warkentin. “By improving facilities like the Fairplex Arena, we are helping to boost economic activity and maintain a high quality of life for Canadians.
”
The Harper Government’s investment of $124,161 will support a number of renovations to the Fairplex Arena, including upgrades to the public washrooms, the replacement of the flooring in various areas, and enhancements to two main entrance areas to create improved access for persons with limited mobility. Further, a new electronic sign will be installed outside the facility to promote events, tournaments and other community functions. These upgrades will allow the Arena to host more events, thereby attracting visitors to the region.
“Residents of the Town of Fairview and surrounding area will benefit greatly from the upgrades to the Fairplex Arena,
” said Gordon MacLeod, Mayor of the Town of Fairview. “This facility located in northern Alberta is our main center of activity during three seasons of the year, providing countless hours of sports, recreation, entertainment and events to all age groups.
”
In Economic Action Plan 2012, the Harper Government announced further support to help communities across the country modernize their infrastructure. Our Government committed $150 million over two years for the Fund. The Fund supports projects that look to improve existing community infrastructure accessible for use by the public, such as community centres, recreational buildings, local arenas, cultural and other community facilities.
Since 2006, the Harper Government, through WD, has invested in job-creating small and medium-sized businesses, aerospace, marine and defence industries, and supported innovative entrepreneurs in pursuing emerging markets. By continuing to promote new economic opportunities, WD is helping to create jobs, economic growth, and long-term prosperity.
