Prime Minister Stephen Harper today issued the following statement in recognition of Black History Month:
"The month of February is celebrated across Canada as Black History Month. We take this time each year to recognize the many achievements and contributions of people of African and Caribbean descent who have done so much throughout our shared history to make Canada the culturally diverse, prosperous and free country it is today.

"This year, we are paying special tribute to the achievements of black Canadians in the area of law enforcement - both past policing pioneers and present leaders who have distinguished themselves by their commitment to serve and protect Canadians"
"I encourage all Canadians to participate in events and festivities taking place in their communities this year to mark Black History Month, and to gain insight into the vital role that black Canadians have played in building Canada and shaping our national identity.
