Improving drainage to protect community roads and buildings
The Canadian Northern Economic Development Agency (CanNor) is investing $297,200 in a project to improve business opportunities in Tulita, NWT by repairing deteriorating drainage infrastructure.
CanNor is investing $297,200 to repair and install culverts near the airport and improve drainage in the community. The project will involve repair or replacement of 65 culverts many of which are part of a drainage strategy for an area of land that has potential for development. The Hamlet will contribute the remaining 50% of the funding required for the project.
Most of the work to correct drainage problems can be done by the Hamlet and will create local employment. Improved drainage will improve roads and enhance airport access in this community which has only winter road and fly-in access. New culverts will also protect existing homes and infrastructure from damage.
Resolving drainage issues will allow the community to prepare for potential business opportunities offered by the recent boom in oil exploration activities in the Sahtu region.
Investment in this project is made possible through the Aboriginal Economic Development (AED) suite of programs. AED is one of several economic development programs within CanNor. CanNor is responsible for coordinating and delivering Canada’s economic development across the North through its contribution programs, and for related policy development and research.
