Waterloo, Ontario — A Government of Canada investment of up to $216,842 will allow Wilfrid Laurier University to launch a new project that will create internships for up to 20 recent graduates of programs in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics at small- and medium-sized businesses in southern Ontario. The investment was announced today by Peter Braid, Member of Parliament for Kitchener-Waterloo, on behalf of the Honourable Gary Goodyear, Minister of State for the Federal Economic Development Agency for Southern Ontario (FedDev Ontario).
"Our Government is committed to creating jobs, growth and long-term prosperity," said MP Braid. "This investment at Wilfrid Laurier University will help young scientists and engineers get the experience, mentorship and business skills they need as they develop into the next generation of leaders in business and innovation in southern Ontario, while allowing the businesses to tap into the knowledge and fresh perspectives that the interns bring."
This investment is being provided through FedDev Ontario's Graduate Enterprise Internship, which provides funding for not-for-profit organizations and post-secondary institutions to arrange internship and mentoring opportunities for recent graduates and graduate students of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) programs with small- and medium-sized enterprises.
"Wilfrid Laurier University is looking forward to the launch of this program," said Dr. Abby Goodrum, vice-president of research at the University. "Our science programs address some of society's most pressing issues and leave our graduates well positioned to begin very productive careers. As well, this program will help to grow local industry and build long-standing collaborative relationships for innovation, turning ideas into research, development and exportable products and services."
