YELLOWKNIFE, NORTHWEST TERRITORIES (March 6, 2013) – The Honourable Bernard Valcourt, Minister of Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development, and the Honourable Rona Ambrose, Minister of Public Works and Government Services and Minister for Status of Women, announced today the awarding of a contract to Clark Builders of Yellowknife to provide interim construction management services at the Giant Mine site.
Under this contract, Clark Builders will carry out upgrades and repairs to the Giant Mine site in order to keep the site safe for workers, the public and the environment prior to the full remediation plan getting underway.
The contract allows the Giant Mine Remediation Project Team to respond to site requirements, assist with the urgent site stabilization work that is scheduled to begin this summer and ensure the health and safety of people and the environment in the vicinity of Giant Mine,
said Minister Valcourt.
This announcement is good news for Northerners and for the northern economy,
said Minister Ambrose. This contract creates northern jobs while contributing to ensuring a safe environment before remediation begins at Giant Mine.
As outlined in the contract, the contractor made an Aboriginal Opportunities Consideration (AOC) commitment for its advisory services and they will also be required to include an AOC in each of their tendered work packages, and to report on and monitor this monthly.
Work under this contract may include, but is not limited to upgrading the effluent treatment plant, decommissioning aged electrical infrastructure, investigative drilling, constructing a storage facility and stabilizing portions of Baker Creek. The contract will end March 31, 2015.
