Fort Saskatchewan, Alberta – Today, the Honourable Tim Uppal, Minister of State for Democratic Reform and Member of Parliament for Edmonton—Sherwood Park, on behalf of the Honourable Lynne Yelich, Minister of State for Western Economic Diversification, announced support for upgrades to the Fort Saskatchewan Sportsplex Arena under the Harper Government's Community Infrastructure Improvement Fund (CIIF).
"The Fort Saskatchewan Sportsplex is a wonderful recreational facility," said Minister Uppal. "Through our Government's support for community facilities, like the Sportsplex, we are boosting economic activity and investing in community spaces important to our children and families."
The Harper Government's investment of $250,000 will support renovations to the Fort Saskatchewan Sportsplex, including upgrades to its lighting system, rink, bleachers and storage rooms. These improvements will allow the Sportsplex to accommodate more visitors and host larger events. This investment will also result in additional recreational opportunities for residents, while also increasing economic activity in the community.
"The Sportsplex Arena was renovated because of the expressed needs of our community," said her Worship Gale Katchur, Mayor of Fort Saskatchewan. "With these improvements, organizations will be able to host larger events here, which also means an economic benefit to the community."
In Economic Action Plan 2012, the Harper Government announced further support to help communities across the country modernize their infrastructure. Our Government committed $150 million over two years for the Fund. The Fund supports projects that look to improve existing community infrastructure accessible for use by the public, such as community centres, recreational buildings, local arenas, cultural and other community facilities.
Since 2006, the Harper Government, through WD, has invested in job-creating small and medium-sized businesses, aerospace, marine and defence industries, and supported innovative entrepreneurs in pursuing emerging markets. By continuing to promote new economic opportunities, WD is helping to create jobs, economic growth, and long-term prosperity.
