Government of Canada funding supports local infrastructure upgrades
Middleton, Nova Scotia, March 25, 2013 – Residents of Middleton can now enjoy a safer drive on Main Street and a new bridge to cross Eel Creek, thanks to joint funding from the Government of Canada, the Town of Middleton and the private sector.
"Our Government is pleased to help strengthen local infrastructure in Middleton and across Nova Scotia,"
said Greg Kerr, Member of Parliament for West Nova. "The completion of these projects will enhance safety for pedestrians, cyclists and motorists while improving traffic flow through the Town. The Gas Tax Fund transfer provides significant infrastructure funding for every municipality in Canada to choose and prioritize projects in their own communities."
"This investment in these infrastructure projects is helping to build strong, healthy communities throughout Nova Scotia,"
said John MacDonell, Minister of Service Nova Scotia and Municipal Relations. "These partnerships with the federal and municipal levels of government allow us to make life better for Nova Scotia families."
"This is testimony to the fact that when governments cooperate, things happen, in a positive way,"
said Calvin Eddy, Mayor of the Town of Middleton.
A LED traffic light was installed at the intersection of Main and Commercial Streets, providing a safer intersection for both pedestrians and motorized traffic. Also, the Marshall Street Bridge, over Eel Brook, was replaced with a modern structure. The Town of Middleton directed $227,775 of its federal Gas Tax Fund allocation toward these projects, in addition to its contribution of $164,000. Loblaw Companies Limited also provided $68,000 to the traffic light project. The total cost of the two projects is $459,775.
Through the Gas Tax Fund transfer alone, the Government of Canada provides $55.9 million in annual funding for municipal infrastructure in Nova Scotia. This Fund delivers stable, long-term funding to local governments to help them build and revitalize public infrastructure. Between 2010 and 2014, the Town of Middleton will receive $567,048 from the federal Gas Tax Fund.
Canada's Economic Action Plan provides new opportunities for growth, job creation and long-term prosperity. Strengthening infrastructure across the country is an important part of this plan. Thanks to the Government of Canada's leadership and our strong economic and financial fundamentals, the Canadian economy has recovered from the global recession better than most other industrialized countries. Canada has been a leader among G-7 countries throughout the recovery with more than 950,000 net new jobs created since July 2009.
