International Trade Minister celebrates entrepreneurship and the importance of small and medium-sized enterprises to Canada’s economy at the Alberta Export Awards
March 15, 2013 - The Honourable Ed Fast, Minister of International Trade and Minister for the Asia-Pacific Gateway, today met the recipients of Alberta Export Awards in Calgary, where he highlighted how the government’s ambitious pro-trade plan will continue to benefit Canadian workers, businesses and families. The awards were hosted by Canadian Manufacturers & Exporters (CME).
“Our government remains solidly focused on what matters to Canadians: jobs, growth and long-term prosperity,” said Minister Fast. “I commend the winners of this year’s Alberta Export Awards, as well as all the other risk-taking entrepreneurs who work tirelessly and contribute to the continued growth of our economy. This kind of success is why we will continue to work hard to give Canadian exporters the tools they need to compete and win in the global economy.”
This year marks the fourth anniversary of the Alberta Export Awards. The program recognizes the achievements of Alberta businesses that are exploring and succeeding in international markets.
“As the backbone of the Canadian economy, small and medium-sized enterprises benefit from the government’s efforts to create a pro-business environment by reducing red tape, keeping taxes low and protecting exporters abroad,” said Jayson Myers, President and CEO of CME. “We applaud the government’s commitment to establishing the tools and policies that help our business community expand and succeed beyond our borders.”
Minister Fast took the opportunity to highlight how Canada and the United States share the largest and most significant energy relationship in the world, reflecting our commitment to energy security, economic prosperity and environmental responsibility. He also emphasized the government’s support for the Keystone XL pipeline project, which will create thousands of jobs in both countries.
“Energy is a cornerstone of the Canada-U.S. economic partnership, and we will continue to be strong advocates for the interests of Canadians,” added Minister Fast. “Ongoing development in Canada’s oil sands is already supporting tens of thousands of jobs on both sides of the border, keeping our economy strong and our communities vibrant.”
In less than six years, the Harper government has concluded new free trade agreements with nine countries. Canada is currently engaged in 19 sets of free trade negotiations, covering 74 countries.
