It is an honour for Sharon and me to be here in Rome to attend the Mass celebrating the election of His Holiness Pope Francis.
We would like first to extend our gratitude to Mr. Jon Allen, Canada’s chargé d’affaires, for hosting this wonderful reception, and to the rector of the Pontifical Canadian College, Father Eric Sylvestre, for his generous allowance and for letting us gather here this evening.
We would also like to thank Ms. Anne Leahey for taking on the challenge of facilitating this visit, and, of course, the Canadian missions in Rome and Vatican City for making it all possible.
Finally, I want to take this opportunity to congratulate the students, staff, supporters and alumni of the Pontifical Canadian College, who are marking its 125th anniversary this year.
As I said, it is an honour to be here with you today.
All over the world, Catholics waited with anticipation as the papal conclave took place. The very first pope to come from the Americas is an inspired choice, one that underlines our changing and globalized world.
Already, we know that Pope Francis will bring with him the values that he holds dear.
From those who know him, we are hearing stories of his humility, his unwavering faith and his belief in the good in others.
Last year, His Holiness said to priests in Argentina: “Go out. Go out and share your testimony, go out and interact with your brothers, go out and share, go out and ask.”
Those are words that we can all follow, regardless of belief.
We must share with each other. This does not mean simply giving of our resources, but also giving of our time and talent to noble and just causes.
In the same vein, we need to listen to those in need, to ask how we can improve lives, to discover new ways to show our compassion. We have to listen to our neighbours and to strangers. We have to care for each other and embrace our differences.
We need to create a smarter, more caring world, one where our children can grow and thrive. And we need to do this together, across disciplines, borders and religions.
As we gather here in celebration of this momentous occasion, I am heartened by the outpouring of support for the new pontiff. It is inspiring to see people in so many countries—of so many different cultures and languages—all raise their voices in unison.
With the very first pope from the Americas will undoubtedly come change, but from what we know of the character and faith of His Holiness, the future of the church is in good hands.
I am glad to bring our very best wishes from all Canadians on this momentous occasion.
