OTTAWA—Their Excellencies the Right Honourable David Johnston, Governor General of Canada, and Mrs. Sharon Johnston will welcome His Excellency Toomas Hendrik Ilves, President of the Republic of Estonia and his spouse, Mrs. Evelin Ilves, at Rideau Hall on May 1, 2013, at 3 p.m. on the occasion of their State visit to Canada.
“I look forward to welcoming President Ilves and Mrs. Ilves, especially since this is the first State visit of an Estonian President to Canada,” said the Governor General. “As President Ilves has both lived in Canada and visited our country on several occasions, this will be a great opportunity to deepen the dialogue between our two countries on issues relating to governance as well as explore the potential for greater cooperation in various sectors such as communications technologies and energy.”

3 p.m. – Official Welcoming Ceremony
An official welcoming ceremony, with military honours, will be held at Rideau Hall. The President of the Republic of Estonia will conduct an inspection of a guard of honour. The Governor General and the President will then offer remarks.

The President will plant a tree on the grounds of Rideau Hall to commemorate his State visit to Canada. The tree will be a red maple (Acer rubrum), which was chosen to symbolize the President’s ties to Canada.
