Headingley, Manitoba
Today, the Honourable Steven Fletcher, Minister of State (Transport) and Member of Parliament for Charleswood—St. James—Assiniboia, on behalf of the Honourable Lynne Yelich, Minister of State for Western Economic Diversification, announced support for improvements to three community facilities in the Rural Municipality of Headingley under the Harper Government's Community Infrastructure Improvement Fund (CIIF).
"I am proud to see Headingley benefit from the Community Infrastructure Improvement Fund," said Minister Fletcher. "This investment in these important recreational and leisure facilities will help create jobs, growth and will support the prosperity of the community for years to come."
The Harper Government's investment of $95,850 will allow the Rural Municipality of Headingley to upgrade three community facilities. The existing playground on Hudson Street will be replaced. The baseball facilities at the Headingley Community Centre will be upgraded with new player benches, lockers and repaired spectator bleachers. As well, the roof, parking lot, windows, lighting and toboggan slide at the Phoenix Community Centre will be renovated. These projects will ensure that residents in the growing community of Headingley will have quality recreation and leisure facilities now and well into the future.
"The Rural Municipality of Headingley welcomes the financial contribution from the Federal Government through the Community Infrastructure Improvement Fund for the improvement of recreational facilities in Headingley," said Councillor Ian Ruth, Rural Municipality of Headingley. "Recreation is becoming a bigger part of our everyday lives and this funding will help us improve our recreation services to the adults, youth, and children of our community, now and into the future."
In Economic Action Plan 2012, the Harper Government announced further support to help communities across the country modernize their infrastructure. Our Government committed $150 million over two years for the Fund. The Fund supports projects that look to improve existing community infrastructure accessible for use by the public, such as community centres, recreational buildings, local arenas, cultural and other community facilities.
Since 2006, the Harper Government, through WD, has invested in job-creating, small- and medium-sized businesses, aerospace, marine and defence industries, and supported innovative entrepreneurs in pursuing emerging markets. By continuing to promote new economic opportunities, WD is helping to create jobs, economic growth, and long-term prosperity.
