Today, James Bezan, Member of Parliament for Selkirk-Interlake, on behalf of the Honourable Lynne Yelich, Minister of State for Western Economic Diversification, announced support for the Stony Mountain Community Centre under the Harper Government's Community Infrastructure Improvement Fund (CIIF).
"The Government of Canada is committed to creating jobs, growth and long-term prosperity in our communities,
" said MP Bezan. "By improving our community facilities, we are helping to boost economic activity and maintain a high quality of life for Canadians.
"
The Harper Government's investment of $60,000 will enhance the services provided by the Stony Mountain Community Centre. The Community Centre is an essential part of the community and is used extensively for hockey, figure skating, socials, meetings and events. The funding will be used to repair and upgrade to security cameras, flooring, and lighting, as well as improve wheelchair access.
"The Stony Mountain Community Centre is very grateful to the Government of Canada for their support of our Arena and Social Hall Upgrade Project. The Community Centre is a very well used and vital part of the Stony Mountain community. The facility is now 40 years old and is overdue for some major repairs and upgrades,
" said David Van Heyst, Board Member, Stony Mountain Community Centre. "With the support of the federal Community Infrastructure Improvement Fund, we have been able to start on a group of projects that will extend the life of the facility, improve energy efficiency, increase facility usage as well as address health and safety concerns. The support of the federal government and the CIIF program is a major component of the funding for these upgrades, without which we would not have been able to undertake this project.
"
In Economic Action Plan 2012, the Harper Government announced further support to help communities across the country modernize their infrastructure. Our Government committed $150 million over two years for the Fund. The Fund supports projects that look to improve existing community infrastructure accessible for use by the public, such as community centres, recreational buildings, local arenas, cultural and other community facilities.
Since 2006, the Harper Government, through WD, has invested in job-creating, small- and medium-sized businesses, aerospace, marine and defence industries, and supported innovative entrepreneurs in pursuing emerging markets. By continuing to promote new economic opportunities, WD is helping to create jobs, economic growth, and long-term prosperity.
