Winnipeg, Manitoba
Today, Joyce Bateman, Member of Parliament for Winnipeg South Centre, on behalf of the Honourable Lynne Yelich, Minister of State for Western Economic Diversification, announced support for the Prairie Theatre Exchange (PTE) under the Harper Government's Community Infrastructure Improvement Fund (CIIF).
"By investing in projects such as this one with the Prairie Theatre Exchange, our Government is demonstrating our continued to support for communities across Canada," said MP Bateman. "These projects will support jobs, growth and the long-term prosperity here in Manitoba, and across Canada."
The Harper Government's investment of $85,429 has allowed PTE to renovate various areas within its facility. The project involved constructing a second boardroom, upgrading the fire prevention system, improving the accessibility in the washroom and creating a barrier-free box office area. PTE is one of Winnipeg's oldest and largest professional theatre companies. This investment has helped improve the facility for the thousands of people who visit the theatre each year to enjoy live shows and participate in theatre classes.
"PTE is grateful for the support from CIIF to support many important upgrades to our facility," said Robert Metcalfe, Artistic Director. "These upgrades not only are used by PTE theatre and school patrons but also by many outside groups who also use our facilities. For 40 years, PTE has been a key member of the Winnipeg arts community and support such as this helps us continue to enrich the lives of Winnipeggers."
In Economic Action Plan 2012, the Harper Government announced further support to help communities across the country modernize their infrastructure. Our Government committed $150 million over two years for the Fund. The Fund supports projects that look to improve existing community infrastructure accessible for use by the public, such as community centres, recreational buildings, local arenas, cultural and other community facilities.
Since 2006, the Harper Government, through WD, has invested in job-creating, small- and medium-sized businesses, aerospace, marine and defence industries, and supported innovative entrepreneurs in pursuing emerging markets. By continuing to promote new economic opportunities, WD is helping to create jobs, economic growth, and long-term prosperity.
