Moncton, NB - On behalf of the Honourable Rona Ambrose, Minister of Public Works and Government Services and Minister for Status of Women, Robert Goguen, Member of Parliament (Moncton-Riverview-Dieppe), today announced Government of Canada support for a project that will promote leadership among young women in Moncton, New Brunswick.
"Our Government is committed to the advancement of women in leadership roles throughout our country," said Minister Ambrose. "Through this project, young women in Moncton will gain important leadership skills to help them become the leaders of tomorrow."
"This project by Support to Single Parents Inc.will foster the talents and interests of young women and girls here in Moncton," said Mr. Goguen. "The Government of Canada strongly supports projects that help young Canadians succeed and make lasting contributions to society."
The Support to Single Parents Inc. organization is receiving $152,000 in Government of Canada funding for a 24-month project. The project will address the under-representation of young women in community leadership and political roles in the Moncton area. Participants will form two groups: one for girls aged 14 to 18; and, the other for young women aged 19 to 25. Through various activities, the girls and young women will identify obstacles to more active participation in leadership roles in their communities.
"We are pleased to partner with the Government of Canada to create real leadership opportunities for young women here in the Moncton community," said Ms. Nancy Hartling, Executive Director of Support to Single Parents Inc. " With this funding, we will develop strategies and action-oriented, community-based projects to address the challenges these young women face."
The Government of Canada has approved more than $5.4 million of funding to date for organizations to carry out projects that promote leadership and economic prosperity among girls and young women. Successful projects were chosen following a Call for Proposals in June 2012 entitled Setting the Stage for Girls and Young Women to Succeed
The Government of Canada is committed to supporting projects that yield concrete results for women and girls while strengthening families, communities and the country. The government's support through Status of Women Canada for community-based projects has nearly doubled since 2006-2007, from $10.8 million to close to $19 million, its highest level ever. Since 2007, more than $21 million in funding has been approved for projects that promote women's leadership and democratic participation.
