April 11, 2013 - Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird today announced that Canada is taking further action in preventing sexual violence against women and girls in conflict areas. Canada will contribute $5 million this year to help prevent conflict-related sexual violence and to respond to the needs of victims.
“Canada continues to take real action to ensure the full, equal and safe participation of women and girls in the economic, social and political life of countries around the world,” said Baird. “Sexual violence is not only a grave human rights violation but a huge barrier to peace, security and development.”
This contribution reflects Canada’s continued and steadfast resolve to end all forms of violence against women and girls abroad.
“Today, I discussed with my G-8 counterparts the best way to support victims and hold perpetrators to account. I will continue to explore ways Canadian expertise and resources can be mobilized and deployed to support international efforts and those of the countries where these crimes continue to be committed.”
Today’s announcement, part of a nearly US$35.5-million (approximately C$36 million) commitment by G-8 member states, is in addition to the $18.5-million contribution Canada will make over the next five years, as announced by Prime Minister Stephen Harper in Kinshasa in October 2012.
