Today, Michelle Rempel, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of the Environment and Member of Parliament for Calgary Centre—North, on behalf of the Honourable Lynne Yelich, Minister of State for Western Economic Diversification, announced support for upgrades to the Thorncliffe Greenview Community Centre under the Harper Government’s Community Infrastructure Improvement Fund (CIIF).
“By supporting infrastructure projects across the country, our Government is creating jobs and economic growth, while responding to the needs of Canadians,
” said MP Rempel. “Our investment today supports renovations to the Thorncliffe Greenview Community Centre, which is an important venue for community events and recreational activities in north-central Calgary.
”
The Harper Government’s investment of $75,268 will go towards upgrades to the Thorncliffe Greenview Community Centre’s utilities, including the replacement of its furnaces, HVAC unit and lighting fixtures. These improvements will increase the facility’s overall energy-efficiency, helping to lower its operating costs in order to better meet the needs of its users for years to come.
“Upgrades to the Thorncliffe Greenview Community Centre will help to ensure community volunteers are able to continue to provide the recreational, cultural and social programs and services that support a healthy, active lifestyle for youth, seniors and families,
” said Alberta Culture Minister Heather Klimchuk. “We are proud to partner with the City of Calgary and the Government of Canada with funding support through the Government of Alberta’s Community Facility Enhancement Program.
”
“Community facilities are so important because they provide space for residents to be active, connect with one another and develop programs and opportunities that make their neighbourhoods great places to live,
” said Gael MacLeod, Ward 4 Alderman for the City of Calgary. “The Thorncliffe Greenview facility offers a wide variety of opportunities to people in this area thanks to the efforts of community volunteers. The City of Calgary is proud to partner with the provincial and federal governments in supporting the long-term sustainability and maintenance of this facility.
”
“The Thorncliffe Greenview Community Association is very pleased to be receiving funding from the federal government to continue upgrading our valued community facility,
” said Brad Giddings, Treasurer of the Thorncliffe Greenview Community Association. “Through the support of this program we can continue our strong tradition of community involvement and participation. The Association recently celebrated its fiftieth anniversary and we look forward to the next fifty years of serving our community.
”
In Economic Action Plan 2012, the Harper Government announced further support to help communities across the country modernize their infrastructure. Our Government committed $150 million over two years for the Fund. The Fund supports projects that look to improve existing community infrastructure accessible for use by the public, such as community centres, recreational buildings, local arenas, cultural and other community facilities.
Since 2006, the Harper Government, through WD, has invested in job-creating small- and medium-sized businesses, aerospace, marine and defence industries, and supported innovative entrepreneurs in pursuing emerging markets. By continuing to promote new economic opportunities, WD is helping to create jobs, economic growth, and long-term prosperity.
