Ottawa, Ontario, May 17, 2013 – Today, the Honourable Rona Ambrose, Minister of Public Works and Government Services and Minister for Status of Women announced the upcoming opening of the Hill Centre, located at 90 Wellington Street. Visitors will start their tours of Parliament at this new centre.
“The Parliament of Canada is the focal point of Canada’s democracy and our capital’s most popular tourist destination,” said Minister Ambrose. “This Centre will provide a vital service to those planning to visit and experience Parliament over the summer—a welcoming space for everyone.”
The Hill Centre was developed via a partnership among Public Works and Government Services Canada, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, the RCMP Foundation and the Library of Parliament.
Free tickets for same-day guided tours of Parliament in English or French will be distributed at the Hill Centre—90 Wellington Street—from May 17 until September 2013. This service, previously based in the Info Tent located on the east side of Centre Block, has moved to this central location and is now paired with other attractions of interest to visitors to the nation’s capital.
Inside the Hill Centre, visitors will be able to make purchases at the Mountie Shop, net proceeds of which support the RCMP Foundation’s funding program for Canada’s youth at risk. They will also learn about the traditional role of the RCMP on the Hill, in Canada and around the world, as well as the rich history behind the Parliament Buildings and the importance of preserving them for generations to come.
“The RCMP will showcase the many facets of our work profiling women in policing, community policing and our international role. Being located at the Hill Centre provides visitors with an opportunity to learn more about the RCMP and the work we do”, said Commissioner Bob Paulson. “Visitors can meet with RCMP members, experience our Courage in Red video series, and get information about the Musical Ride both here in Ottawa and in their local communities.”
