The Government of Canada is committed to establishing strategic international partnerships in the energy sector that will generate economic benefits and knowledge in Canada. To this end, on May 30, 2013 (TBC), Canada and Chile signed a Joint Statement on Energy Cooperation following a meeting between Prime Minister Stephen Harper and Sebastián Piñera, President of Chile. The statement reaffirms the two countries’ common interests in facilitating trade and investment ties in the energy sector, and strengthening energy security.
The Joint Statement will promote cooperation between Natural Resources Canada and the Ministry of Energy of Chile, and will reinforce their ability to work together in international organizations such as the Energy and Climate Partnership of the Americas and the Energy Working Group of the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation of which both countries are members.
Canada and Chile are seeking to advance sustainable growth of their energy sectors by diversifying their markets. The Joint Statement provides a framework which will facilitate the two countries undertaking a number of activities in the energy sector such as: sharing information on best practices, policies and programs in renewable energy, encouraging technical and commercial communication on trade opportunities in liquefied natural gas, and seeking opportunities to collaborate on enhancing energy efficiency.
Canada and Chile will also encourage enhanced commercial cooperation between interested companies in the energy sector.
