The Government of Canada is committed to ensuring that responsible and sustainable mining practices in the Americas contribute to economic growth and social development, while minimizing environmental footprints. To this end, on May 30, 2013, Prime Minister Stephen Harper and Sebastián Piñera, President of Chile, announced the renewal of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) Regarding Cooperation on the Sustainable Development of Minerals and Metals for a further five-year period, ending in 2018. The announcement was made during the President’s state visit to Canada.
Initially signed in 2008, the MoU creates opportunities for Canada and Chile to collaborate and share knowledge on environmental and natural resource technologies, and to promote investment and trade in minerals and metals. It also facilitates the exchange of best practices in areas such as corporate social responsibility, natural resource governance and community engagement.
The renewed MoU creates further opportunities to advance Canadian expertise and leadership in environmental and natural resources technologies. It also includes sections on policy approaches related to Indigenous peoples, and green mining technologies including mine site reclamation.
