The Honourable Jim Flaherty, Minister of Finance, was recognized last night by Easter Seals Ontario for his record of commitment to helping children and youth with physical disabilities at its annual Toronto’s Tribute Dinner.
Minister Flaherty spearheaded the Registered Disability Savings Plan (RDSP) as well as the Enabling Accessibility Fund in 2007, two important programs that benefit persons with disabilities and their families.
“When I became Minister of Finance in 2006, I was well aware of the need for enhanced and sustainable programs for persons with disabilities and the people who care for them,” said Minister Flaherty. “Our Government recognizes that Canada is stronger when it benefits from the full participation of all Canadians. This is why over the last seven years our Government has introduced a series of initiatives to better support persons with disabilities and their families.”
The RDSP was introduced in the 2007 budget to help families set aside money for a member with a disability. Nearly 70,000 RDSPs have been opened across all provinces and territories since the plan has become available. Since 2008, approximately $340 million has been contributed to RDSPs. In addition, the Government of Canada has paid $475 million in Canada Disability Savings Grants and $215 million in Canada Disability Savings Bonds into these plans.
Also, Minister Flaherty led the introduction of the Enabling Accessibility Fund in 2007, which supports community-based projects across Canada that improve accessibility, remove barriers and enable Canadians with disabilities to participate in and contribute to their communities.
