Gaspé, Quebec, May 6, 2013 -- Parks Canada is contributing $10,000 to the Association of Persons Expropriated from Forillon and their Descendants in support of the group’s project to gather first-person accounts. This contribution will serve to document the memory of people whose property was expropriated to create Forillon Parks and thereby ensure that this memory enters the history books for all time.
“Once again, Parks Canada is supporting the Association in order to commemorate the memory of expropriated people, as it has done previously in relation to the exhibit entitled ‘Gaspesians from Land’s End’, gatherings and reunions, the issuance of passes, and the commemorative panels project,” explained Mr. Stéphane Marchand, Superintendent of Forillon National Park.
This project consists of gathering, in digital audio-visual format, the personal accounts of the greatest number of former residents of Forillon. “The collaboration de Parks Canada in this project will help us to fill a gap in the documentation of these events dating to 40 years ago”, said Ms. Marie-Laure Rochefort, President of the Association of Persons Expropriated from Forillon and their Descendants.
This contribution continues forward with the process of collaboration with people expropriated from Forillon and their descendants that first began in 2006. It also shows the openness and determination of Parks Canada to work together with stakeholders and local partners with the objective of protecting and presenting the natural and cultural treasures of Forillon National Park on behalf of present and future generations.
