Ottawa, June 10, 2013—The Honourable Maxime Bernier, Minister of State (Small Business and Tourism), today recognized the start of Tourism Week in Canada, which runs from June 10 to 16:
"On this occasion, I would like to acknowledge the significant contribution that tourism entrepreneurs make to Canada. They create jobs and wealth in every region of the country while sending travellers home with fond memories of our country's distinct culture and cuisine, warm hospitality, vibrant cities and natural landscapes.
"As our government builds on the momentum created by the launch of Canada's Federal Tourism Strategy, we will continue to work toward positioning Canada's tourism sector to take full advantage of international growth opportunities. We have been delivering on our commitments and have reached important milestones on several of them, which will be outlined in the first annual report on the Tourism Strategy to be released later this week.
"Meanwhile, Canadian tourism is undergoing healthy growth. Last year, Canada's tourism sector revenues reached an unprecedented $81.9 billion, employed well over half a million Canadians and welcomed more American, Chinese, Indian, Mexican and Brazilian travellers, among others.
"As a result, Canada has once again gained global recognition, ranking among the top ten in the World Economic Forum's Travel and Tourism Competitiveness Report 2013.
"Our government will continue to work with tourism stakeholders to help realize Canada's full potential as one of the world's premier tourism destinations."
