Welcome all of you to Rideau Hall for this presentation of credentials.
Since becoming governor general, I have received many credentials and have had the good fortune to meet with representatives from countries all over the world.
I am always fascinated by the fact that despite differences of culture or language, we can all find something in each other that strikes a common chord.
This is essential to the practice of diplomacy, as you well know.
Your predecessors in this role were able to get to know Canada and Canadians, and now you will have the same opportunity to share your unique skills and expertise with others.
Ambassador Ligor, I hope that you and your family will enjoy your time here. Your experience abroad, particularly during your time working at the Mission to the European Union, will no doubt prove to be an asset in your dealings with Canada.
There remains so much room for growth in the relationship between Canada and Romania. We have already seen a jump in our trade relations in recent years, and we have much more to offer each other in areas such as education, innovation, research and technology. I look forward to exploring with you the different ways our two countries can partner.
Ambassador Suárez, welcome back to Canada! This country holds special meaning for you and your family, given that two of your children have studied here, and one now lives in Toronto. As you have often visited Canada, you are already familiar with what makes this country special. I am glad to have such a good friend of Canada represent Mexico.
Mexico and Canada have maintained a solid friendship for many years, based on our common values. I had the chance to visit Mexico last year for the inauguration of your president. There, I also met with many who are continuing to build our relationship, which has so many avenues for growth. I look forward to sharing my experiences with you.
Ambassador Hau Do Suan, as a career public servant, you know the importance of service to your country. You also know that diplomatic efforts in both our countries are crucial in strengthening our ties.
There is so much opportunity for both Canada and Myanmar to expand our burgeoning relationship, and I believe that this begins with people. Your appointment allows us to speak face to face on important issues, just as Canada’s first ambassador to Myanmar will be charged with finding new ways in which we can work together. I hope that the exchanges you have with Canadians will be fruitful.
High Commissioner Eng, yours has been a career marked by a wide range of experiences, but I hope that one day you will look back on your time in Canada as a highlight. Canadians and Singaporeans are already collaborating on many fronts, and I know that you will find new ways in which we can co-operate.
In 2011, I had the opportunity to undertake a State visit to Singapore. There, I learned how much we have in common and the important roles investment, trade, education and innovation play in our relationship. Singapore and Canada share a close friendship based on common values and people-to-people ties, which I hope will only strengthen during your time here.
High Commissioner Potter, your commitment to serving the people of your country is admirable. I know that you will take the time to get to know this country and to speak with many Canadians who are ready to build partnerships to the benefit of both our peoples.
Canada and Seychelles are members of both the Commonwealth and the Francophonie, which allow us to work together on the world stage. I hope that your time as high commissioner will allow us the opportunity to further our relations and to strengthen the ties that unite us.
Once again, allow me to welcome all of you to Canada and to wish you the very best as you assume your new roles.
