Ms. Nellie T. Kusugak was initially appointed Deputy Commissioner of Nunavut on January 14, 2010. She is highly respected in her community and across the territory for her commitment to public service.
Ms. Kusugak is a professional teacher with an extensive background in traditional and cultural education, teaching English as a second language and working with community elders.
Fluent in English and Inuktitut, Ms. Kusugak has been a prominent member of the education community since 1986. Most recently, she was an instructor at Nunavut Arctic College in Rankin Inlet.
Throughout her academic career, Ms. Kusugak has been awarded Highest Academic Achievement honours several times.
In addition to Co-Chairing the Nunavut Teacher Education Program Review Panel in 2006, she is also a member of several professional organizations including the Nunavut Employee Union, Language Committee, Federation of Nunavut Teachers, Northwest Territories Teachers Association and the Professional Development Committee, Maani Ulujuk Ilinniarvik in Rankin Inlet.
Ms. Kusugak has also pursued various volunteer activities, including work with the Nunavut/Northwest Territories Registered Nurses Arbitration Committee and the Rankin Inlet District Education Council.
