SUDBURY, ONTARIO — Jay Aspin, Member of Parliament for Nipissing—Timiskaming, on behalf of the Honourable Denis Lebel, Minister of Transport, Infrastructure and Communities, Minister of the Economic Development Agency of Canada for the Regions of Quebec, and Minister of Intergovernmental Affairs, today announced more than $3 million in funding for two safety improvement projects at the Greater Sudbury Airport.
The Greater Sudbury Airport is receiving through the Airports Capital Assistance Program (ACAP), $2,425,854 for the rehabilitation of Runway 04-22 and the replacement of selected apron panels and $754,567 for the installation of a wildlife management fence. The runway rehabilitation and apron panel work will ensure continued safe operation for passengers, medical evacuations, and fire fighting operations, while the wildlife fence is an important tool in controlling mammals, especially bears, on airport runways and surrounding land.
“As Vice-Chair of the Aerospace Caucus it has been a priority of mine to work with the government in strengthening our regional aerospace infrastructure and industry,” said MP Aspin. “Projects like this strengthen our local economy while also enhancing safety of all those who use this airport, the net result is a benefit to the communities and businesses of Northern Ontario.”
“We are extremely pleased to receive significant financial support from Transport Canada’s Airports Capital Assistance Program,” said Dr. Bish Bora, Chair, Greater Sudbury Airport Community Development Corporation. “This investment will result in safer operations and improved services to the travelling public and will enable the Greater Sudbury Airport to fulfill its role as a catalyst for economic development.”
To date, through ACAP, the Greater Sudbury Airport has received more than $10 million for 16 projects, including today’s announcement. Since the program started, the Government of Canada has invested more than $606 million for 750 projects at 174 airports. Improvements include purchasing/replacing heavy airside mobile equipment; installing wildlife fencing; and rehabilitating runway pavements, airfield lighting and electrical systems.
