Winnipeg, Manitoba, July 31, 2013— Today, in her new role as Minister of Labour, the Honourable Dr. Kellie Leitch congratulated the management and employees at Bison Transport for their superior safety practices and record.
“Since 2006, our Government has remained focused on what matters to Canadians -jobs, economic growth and long-term prosperity,” said Minister Leitch to Bison Transport employees, on the first stop of her two-day visit to Winnipeg. “Promoting safe and healthy workplaces is part of the formula for success in today’s competitive marketplace.”
“Everyone—employers, employees, governments and organizations—has a role to play in promoting occupational safety,” added Minister Leitch. “We share in this responsibility to Canadian workers and their families. Together we can work towards achieving a model for fair, respectful and healthy workplaces.”
Bison Transport provides a wide range of transportation, warehousing and logistics services throughout North America. The company has received several First Place Truckload Carriers Association National Fleet Safety Awards in the 100+ Million Miles category, including in 2012, and also recognizes collision-free drivers through its own in‑house award program.
Joyce Bateman, Member of Parliament for Winnipeg South Centre, accompanied Minister Leitch during her visit. “Workplace safety is vital to all workers,” said Ms. Bateman, “When Canadian workplaces are running well, our whole economy benefits.”
The Labour Program promotes fair, safe and healthy workplaces. It also develops, administers and enforces workplace legislation and regulations, including the Canada Labour Code, which covers industrial relations, health and safety and employment standards, and the Employment Equity Act. These laws cover federally regulated workers and employers.
