OTTAWA - August 28, 2013 - The Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency is conducting a comprehensive study type environmental assessment of the proposed KSM (Kerr-Sulphurets-Mitchell) Project located in British Columbia. The Agency invites the public to comment on the potential environmental effects of the project and the proposed measures to prevent or mitigate those effects, as described in a summary of the proponent's Environmental Impact Statement (EIS).
The KSM Project is subject to review under both the Canadian Environmental Assessment Act and British Columbia's Environmental Assessment Act and is undergoing a cooperative environmental assessment process with B.C.'s Environmental Assessment Office (EAO).
Seabridge Gold Incorporated proposes to develop a combined open-pit and underground gold, copper, silver, and molybdenum mine in the Kerr, Sulphurets, and Mitchell Creek watersheds located about 65 kilometres northwest of Stewart, British Columbia. The proposed KSM Project is expected to process 130,000 tonnes per day of ore over a mine life of up to 55 years.
The 45-day public comment period is from September 6, 2013 to October 21, 2013. Information sessions will also be held during the comment period.
Comments need only be submitted once to either the Agency or the EAO to be considered for both the provincial and federal environmental assessments. Written comments can be submitted to either:

Following this comment period, the Agency will prepare a comprehensive study report, setting out its conclusions on the environmental effects, the proposed mitigation measures, and the significance of any remaining adverse environmental effects. A public comment period on the Comprehensive Study Report will be announced later.
This project is being assessed using a science-based approach under the Canadian Environmental Assessment Act.
The Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency administers the federal environmental assessment process, which identifies the environmental effects of proposed projects and measures to address those effects, in support of sustainable development.
