Ottawa, August 14, 2013 — The Honourable Jason Kenney issued the following statement to recognize Pakistan Independence Day:
“Today, millions of people of Pakistani descent will celebrate Pakistan Independence Day across the globe. On this historic day in 1947, Pakistan was declared a sovereign nation.
“In Canada, those of Pakistani descent will celebrate with family, friends and other members of their communities. The annual Toronto Pakistan Day Parade is among the largest celebrations in Canada.
“Pakistanis began migrating to Canada in the late 1950s. Today, Pakistan is among Canada’s top ten source countries for immigrants. It is estimated that about 300,000 Canadians are of Pakistani descent.
“This day provides an opportunity for all Canadians to reflect on the significant contributions to our country made by those of Pakistani descent.
“I encourage all Canadians to join in today’s celebrations and I wish everyone celebrating a happy Pakistan Independence Day”.
