Ottawa, August 8, 2013 – Ministers Jason Kenney and Chris Alexander issued the following statement recognizing Eid al-Fitr, the Festival of the Breaking of the Fast:
“Falling on the first day of the month of Shawwal on the Islamic calendar, Eid al-Fitr is an important holiday marking the end of the holy month of Ramadan and the start of a feast that lasts up to three days.
“Muslims everywhere celebrate the day by sharing festive meals with family, friends and neighbours. Muslims also observe Eid al-Fitr with congregational prayers and charitable giving to those in need.
“For all Canadians, Eid al-Fitr provides an excellent opportunity to learn more about Islam and the tremendous contributions that Muslims have made to fostering a strong and pluralistic Canada.
“Eid al-Fitr is a celebration of faith, family and community. It underscores our rich diversity, our strength and generosity as a country.
“On behalf of the Government of Canada, we extend our best wishes to all Muslims for a happy and healthy Eid al-Fitr.
“Eid Mubarak.”
