Prime Minister Stephen Harper spoke this evening with Ban Ki-moon, Secretary-General of the United Nations. They discussed the situation in Syria.
Both expressed their deep concern about ongoing developments in Syria, especially the disturbing events of the past week.
Prime Minister Harper commended the efforts of the United Nations chemical weapons inspectors under very difficult circumstances. Both leaders stressed that the inspections currently underway should be expeditious and free from harassment. Prime Minister Harper underlined Canada's continuing support to the humanitarian assistance effort in Syria. The Prime Minister and the Secretary-General agreed to stay in touch on this matter.
