Prime Minister Stephen Harper today issued the following statement to mark the 66th anniversary of Pakistan’s independence:
“Today I extend my best wishes to all those celebrating the anniversary of Pakistan’s independence.
“Canada is home to a vibrant community of Canadians of Pakistani heritage who continue to make significant contributions to our nation in all areas of endeavour.
“On this special occasion, we reflect upon these contributions and our relations with Pakistan. We congratulate the people of Pakistan on the recent election which was a historic milestone in the development of Pakistan’s democracy. We stand in support of all those who promote stability, security, democracy and human rights, including religious freedom, in the region.
“Once again, I wish all those participating in celebrations a happy and festive Pakistan Independence Day.”
