Ottawa, September 3, 2013 - The Canada Council for the Arts has won an inaugural Excellence in Governance Awards from the Canadian Society of Corporate Secretaries (CSCS) in the category "Best Stakeholder and/or Shareholder Engagement by a Governance Team." The three other finalists in this category were BCE, Telus and RBC.
The Council was recognized for its Board support and outreach to key stakeholders through such activities as community consultations on strategic plans and public engagement, regular meetings with National Arts Service Organizations (NASO), spearheading the Canadian Public Arts Funders (CPAF) and Tri-level networks across Canada, and reaching out to other government stakeholders.
“I am delighted that a Crown corporation within the Canadian Heritage portfolio was the sole public sector organization honoured at these inaugural awards,” said the Honourable Shelly Glover, Minister of Canadian Heritage and Official Languages. “On behalf of the Government of Canada, I congratulate the Canada Council for the Arts on their fine work.”
“It is greatly satisfying to have the Council’s work recognized as a best practice by industry peers,” said Joseph Rotman, Canada Council Board Chair, “and reinforces our strong commitment to working with key stakeholders in engaging the public with the arts.”
The selection was made by an expert panel of individuals from the private sector, which looked at overall stakeholder engagement activities, including the effectiveness of stakeholder outreach, accessibility of the Board and level of responsiveness to stakeholder activities. Details about the award can be found in the CSCS news release.
