Prime Minister Stephen Harper spoke this evening with Tony Abbott, Prime Minister-elect of Australia. Prime Minister Harper congratulated Prime Minister-elect Abbott on his impressive victory in Australia’s federal election on September 7, 2013.
Both Leaders underlined the importance of the Canada and Australia bilateral relationship and committed themselves to working together to further strengthen and deepen the partnership.
During the call, they also discussed Canada and Australia's long history of cooperation on the international stage within the frameworks of the G-20, APEC, the Commonwealth and the United Nations. The Prime Minister offered Canada's support to ensuring a successful 2014 G-20, which will be hosted by Australia. The two Leaders agreed to speak further when they see each other at the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) meeting next month in Indonesia.
