Today in New York, Prime Minister Stephen Harper held a bilateral meeting with Macky Sall, President of the Republic of Senegal. They discussed the growing cooperation between Canada and Senegal, as well as their shared priorities around international peace and security, including in Mali and the Sahel.
The leaders also took stock of trade and investment issues. Prime Minister Harper underlined significant Canadian mining interests in Senegal. They agreed to work towards increasing commercial linkages.
The Prime Minister indicated that he was looking forward to the next Summit of La Francophonie, which will be hosted in Dakar in November 2014. Canada is providing assistance to Senegal for the organization of the Summit.
Christian Paradis, Minister of International Development and Minister for La Francophonie, also participated in the meeting.
