Prime Minister Stephen Harper today issued the following statement to mark Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year, which begins this evening at sundown.
"On behalf of the Government of Canada, I extend best wishes to the Jewish communities across Canada and around the world as they mark the beginning of Rosh Hashanah.
"The start of the New Year is a sacred occasion, during which friends and family gather together to celebrate, reflect on the past year, and look to the year ahead with hope and anticipation.
"This occasion also presents an opportunity to acknowledge the immense contributions – both past and present – made by the Jewish community here in Canada, which has greatly enriched our nation.
"Once again, Laureen and I wish all those celebrating Rosh Hashanah joyous festivities and a new year full of health and happiness.
