Ottawa, Ontario
Prime Minister Stephen Harper today issued the following statement to mark Yom Kippur:
“At sundown, Jewish communities across Canada and around the world will gather to observe Yom Kippur, one of the holiest days in the Jewish calendar.
“Marking the end of the Ten Days of Awe, Yom Kippur is the Jewish Day of Atonement where the entire Jewish community seeks forgiveness for the sins of the past year. It is also a time for prayer, fasting and introspection, and offers an opportunity to look ahead with hope for all that the coming year may bring.
“Laureen and I extend our best wishes to all those who are gathering to mark this solemn and sacred day.
“Gemar chatima tovah.”
