October 2, 2013 (Ottawa): The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) has suspended the licence to operate of Heng Xing Enterprises (Canada), effective September 27, 2013. The company is a licenced fish importer located in Richmond, BC.
There are currently no food safety issues associated with this suspension and no product is being recalled at this time. However, the CFIA is continuing its investigation. Should a recall be required, the CFIA will issue a Health Hazard Alert.
The licence was suspended because the company has failed to implement corrective actions it previously committed to following a licence renewal in June 2013. The corrective actions were related to ensuring proper declaration and submission of Fish Import Notifications (FINs).
The company pleaded guilty in November 2012 to contravening the Fish Inspection Regulations for unlawfully processing crab and attempting to export the processed frozen crab in improperly marked containers.
Heng Xing Enterprises (Canada) will not have its licence reinstated until it has fully demonstrated the capacity to implement the necessary corrective actions as approved by the CFIA.
The CFIA safeguards food, animals and plants which enhances the health and well-being of Canada's people, environment and economy, and access to international markets. Licences and registrations of federally registered establishments or companies can be suspended or cancelled for failing to comply with relevant CFIA Acts and Regulations.
