The Canada Council for the Arts extends warm congratulations to Alice Munro, the first Canadian-based writer to win the Nobel Prize in literature. This prestigious international recognition for one of Canada’s best writers is a source of pride for all Canadians. Alice Munro is a three-time winner and five-time finalist of the Governor General’s Literary Awards, administered by the Canada Council. Her first collection of short stories, Dance of the Happy Shades, was awarded the GG in 1968. In addition, she was awarded the Canada Council Molson Prize in 1990.
