About the Governor General’s Literary Awards
The Governor General’s Literary Awards, administered by the Canada Council for the Arts, are Canada’s oldest and most prestigious awards for English- and French-language Canadian literature. They were established by former Governor General, Lord Tweedsmuir (also known as John Buchan, author of The Thirty-Nine Steps). The first awards honoured books published in 1936. The Awards have since evolved into Canada’s pre-eminent national literary awards. In addition to the monetary award, each laureate receives a framed copy of their winning book.
