(Chapter 5—Funding Programs for Species at Risk—Fall 2013 Report of the Commissioner of the Environment and Sustainable Development)
Ottawa, 5 November 2013—Environment Canada collects information on the results of its funding programs individually and now needs to roll up these results to determine the programs’ overall contribution to implementing strategies for species at risk, says Neil Maxwell, interim Commissioner of the Environment and Sustainable Development, in his Fall 2013 report tabled today in Parliament. The Department uses funding programs to promote the recovery of species at risk listed under the Species at Risk Act.
The audit found that Environment Canada has mechanisms for tracking activities and results of individual funding programs. However, it is not in a position to easily identify which actions called for in recovery plans have been funded through its programs.
“I am pleased to see that Environment Canada is tracking the results of its funding programs for species at risk,” said Mr. Maxwell. “Going forward, Environment Canada should roll up results across programs to fully understand what its funding achieves.”
