Ottawa – The RCMP is embarking on an innovative new way of interacting with Canada’s youth, right in their own classrooms.
Offering advice and guidance on tough issues such as bullying, violence and impaired and distracted driving, “RCMPTalks” is a series of four live, interactive videoconferences taking place in selected schools across the country in the coming months. Each RCMPTalk conversation will allow students from six different Canadian classrooms per session to hold a discussion via videoconference and social media, and pose questions to designated guests during a 90 minute live session. In addition, any classroom and the general public may connect to listen in on the conference.
Guests will include police officers, victims and rehabilitated offenders. To accompany each video conference, learning activities and resources will be provided for teachers to deliver to students over a period of one to two weeks prior to the conference. The following “RCMPTalks” sessions have been scheduled for 2013/14:
- Bullying & Cyberbullying – Tuesday, November 19, 2013 during Bullying Awareness Week.
- Impaired & Distracted Driving – Wednesday, December 4, 2013 during National Safe Driving Week.
- Violence Amongst Youth – Wednesday, February 12, 2014.
- Bullying & Cyberbullying (French) – Wednesday, February 26, 2014 on Pink Shirt Day.
Through this initiative, the RCMP aims to empower youth to take action on important social issues. Supporting youth is one of the RCMP's strategic priorities; we work with our community partners to address and prevent key risk factors that can result in young people becoming either victims of crime or offenders.
